The remainder is donated to Rochester-area agencies. The agency provides most of its aid to individuals in the form of emergency food and financial assistance, and youth summer recreation scholarships. The Webster Community Chest has been serving the Webster community since 1948, with a mission to serve the people of Webster in ways not provided for by other social service agencies. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Webster Community Chest, and 16 other Webster and Rochester-area non-profit organizations. ![]() Other funds are raised through businesses that sponsor tables or rooms, or provide prizes for winning displays. Prizes and certificates are awarded in several categories, including Best Literary Peep, Best Science Fiction Peep, Best Sports Peep, and Best Holiday Peep. The top vote-getter gets the "Peeples Choice" award. Much of the show’s proceeds are raised by selling tokens, which attendees can use to vote for their favorite Peeps creation. At more than 8 feet long, it will be big enough for children to play in.Ĭhildren will also enjoy a new entry this year, a 15-foot-long Peep target range where kids can shoot marshmallow chicks at a big Peep bunny target. The largest, which will be returning this year, was a fairy-tale castle covered with more than 1,500 Peeps marshmallow chicks. The smallest entry two years ago was a two-Peep diorama depicting Huckleberry Peep and his friend Jim rafting down the Mississippi, measuring just 6 by 8 inches. The show will feature entries from local businesses, community organizations and Scout troops, ranging from very small to very large. Grenier says the agency hopes to have at least twice the number of displays this year, and raise double the money. The Community Chest’s first Peep Show, held in 2015, attracted 85 displays, was attended by more than 2,000 people, and raised $3,100. The basic premise, having people make works of art and dioramas out of Peeps, stayed pretty much the same, however.īasically, Grenier said, “We have an art show,” although “it’s an art form that’s not normally taught in school. When they imported the idea two years ago, they copied some of the best ideas, changed others, and made the show their own. We swung by there and spent the afternoon, and besides having a good time, we said this would be an ideal event to have in the Rochester area.” “My wife and I stumbled onto a Peep show like this in Maryland. For the grand prize, Davis won a giant plush bunny a special VIPeeps visit to Just Born, the maker of PEEPS in Bethlehem, Pa.“We needed to find something interesting to do” to raise funds, Grenier said. “It was the 10th year, and the shoe I made last year was big, but I wanted to make something really big to honor it.”ĭavis thanked her family for putting up with what turned into eight-hour work days in the weeks prior to the PEEPshow as well as her sponsors Kim Fitzgerald and. “I’m a big fan of ‘Game of Thrones’ and I just love dragons,” Davis said. She said she began working on the dragon’s armature after Christmas, but didn’t apply her first Peep to the final piece until March 14. ![]() This year, the PEEPshow saw more than 25,000 visitors over the 10-day period visiting each of the sculptures within.ĭavis said she was thrilled to take home the grand prize, determined by a combination of in-person and online voting. This year, voting was split between in-person and online, where viewers were invited to donate a dollar to the arts council in exchange for a voice in choosing what the top Peep piece would be.Īccording to Sandy Oxx, executive director of the Carroll County Arts Council, online voting took off in the final minutes of the PEEPshow, with about $2,000 coming in with less than 10 minutes until the polls were closed. The Arts Council is a 501c3 non-profit arts organization located in a renovated 1937. Vivian Davis’ sculpture of an 8? 1/2-foot-tall dragon with a 6-foot wingspan featured more than 5,000 Peeps and earned 7,702 votes. The PEEPshow is the Carroll County Arts Councils largest fundraiser. The Carroll County Arts Council hosted its concluding ceremony Wednesday for the PEEPshow, which has brought tourists and residents to the Arts Center to check out more than 150 Peep-inspired pieces of art over the past 10 days. Size mattered as the largest sculpture, “Mother of (Peeps) Dragons,” took home the grand prize at the 10th annual PEEPshow at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster.

I love Kindle and Audible and I hate to give it a bad review but on Mac, this app is garbage. This subreddit is for everything Kindle related. I hate to buy the books twice because I obviously can only do this with the hard copy now (with the added inconvenience of not having the reference on the screen next to what I’m working on). It is infuriating to try to learn something while your app can’t stay on the intended page and 2/3 of your learning time is getting annoyed and fighting the program just to keep the page. I gave up on it a few times, then came back because I already paid for the book and was determined to get through it. When I ordered another book, this time on Python, it was the same wretched experience. Unfortunately, I forgot about that experience and, being busy with work, didn’t have time for Kindle until recently. Then I’d get it right and halfway through the page it would start doing it again. So then I’d have to go back the other way. Clicking to find the page would also result in it going much further than I intended it to. Then I would have to go back and find the page I was on. I didn’t click anything, I didn’t hit any keys. With no input from me whatsoever, the pages jumped forwards or backwards by 2-8 pages. Seven months ago I purchased a book on Javascript and attempted to work my way through it. However, using it on MacOS is frustrating. I’ve used Kindle for years and I have always loved it. It would be nice to at least put bullet points in the "notes" section. I usually have to copy and paste my exported highlights and notes into OneNote and then reformat eveything. I also wish that you could do more formatting with any notes that you take. That way I could export the notes I know I need and found to be highly applicable and important to my work at the time, while still keeping the entirety of my highlights and notes on the app in the event that I need to export all of them in the future. ![]() For example, if I only wanted to export the highlights and notes that I starred rather than every highlight and note, then I could do so by applying a filter. I wish that, just as we can filter our highlights and notes in the app, we could do the same when exporting highlights and notes. I do wish there were some more features, particularly when it comes to exporting highlights and notes. If required books for my courses were available on Kindle and had corresponding page numbers, it was typically more cost effective, easier to organize notes, and allowed me to easily read and take notes anywhere. The past two years has found me using it more often for grad school. I've been using this app for years now, but it's been a while since I've used it for leasurely reading. ![]() Wish It Had More Features and Capabilities Links to these terms and notices can be found in the footer of your local Amazon homepage.
![]() I did see turkey legs and a sign for mead, but I think the mead was just beer. I thought it was weird that you could buy pizza and Whiteclaw at a Renaissance festival this was my first time going and I expected it to be more period-accurate. The food and drinks are over-priced but that’s to be expected at such an event. But kids wouldn’t notice the poor performances as well. The energy from some was still good and helped make the shows, but I’d say it’s probably more kid-level than an adult would enjoy, yet some of the jokes made aren’t great for kids so there’s an imbalance there. ![]() One woman used a terrible British accent as entertainment. Songs were present-day and sung badly over and over. Shows talked big but did little-passionate people without the talent to back it up. For one, there were loud speakers and microphones used, which I was disappointed by. There was a lot less period-accurate things happening than I expected. Shouldn’t it be packed dirt? There wasn’t gravel back then. The benches are warped and have green things growing on them. Colors are faded on flags and tapestries. It’s marketed as a permanent village, which to me made it seem like there would be good, well-made structures there when in reality, much of it looks like thin pieces of old wood nailed together to make ramshackle buildings. As Sarah Gibbens at National Geographic reports, up to 70 of the birds may still live in captivity, meaning there’s a chance they could one day return to the wild. A Spix’s macaw was believed to have been spotted in the wild in 2016, though that was likely an escaped captive bird before that, the last known sighting of the bird in the wild came in 2000. The most well-known species on that list of eight is the Spix’s macaw, Cyanopsitta spixii, the baby-blue Brazilian parrot species whose plight was the plot of the 2011 movie Rio. They found that three species were extinct, one was extinct in the wild and four are on the verge of extinction if they are not already gone. Over the course of eight years, the authors examined 819 records and 356 surveys of the birds and consulted with experts to come to their conclusions. The study statistically analyzed sightings and habitat loss of 51 critically endangered bird species not seen for 10 years or who’ve faced existential threats in that time. “Our evidence shows there is a growing wave of extinctions washing over the continent driven by habitat loss from unsustainable agriculture, drainage and logging.” “People think of extinctions and think of the dodo but our analysis shows that extinctions are continuing and accelerating today,” BirdLife chief scientist Stuart Butchart, lead author of the study published in the journal Biological Conservation, tells Barkham. Some are taking place on large continents, in particular South America, that once insulated the animals from human impact. But the latest extinctions highlight a concerning trend. Other, well, meatier species, like the dodo and the great auk were hunted as food by sailors, and some, considered agricultural pests, were exterminated on purpose. Historically, 90 percent of the estimated 187 species of birds that we know have gone extinct lived almost exclusively on small islands where they had no place to flee from invasive species or habitat loss. But Patrick Barkham at The Guardianreports that a new study put together by BirdLife International says its time to erect tombstones for four bird species that have disappeared from the wild over the last decade and to get the casket ready for four more that are almost certainly gone. It’s hard to say if a species has truly gone extinct or if they're are just being coy there are stories every year about birds once believed to be extinct that suddenly reappear. Any bird watcher can tell you-finding a rare species is maddening, with the birds popping up at unexpected times then hiding again for days, months and sometimes even years. |
